Hey there baby,
and a warm and lovely welcome back to this weeks episode of “Yoko Playing Dress Up”. No, I’m joking, as usual. But am I? At least this look is not an April Fools, though weather as usual is trying to trick me. But with the latest swoosh back to spending the whole day inside, dressing really feels like dressing up to me, kinda. That might go along with me not being able to get ready in the morning because I am totally sleep deprived, every day, and SOMEHOW I don’t seem to catch up on the lost sleep of a few years. Don’t know why. But I’m sure most of you feel me. Could a good sleep pattern correct that? Definitely. Am I able to keep up a good sleep pattern? Definitely not! But for reasons of growing as a person, I like to set myself challenges every now and then. Most of the time this really does its magic, because if I set myself a goal, I’m going all Monica Geller to achieve that. For the ones of you that didn’t watch Friends and therefore didn’t got the reference – Monica is a warm-hearted, lovingly sister and friend but goes all the way berserk when playing games, because she wants to win. The comparison doesn’t fit 100%, but it’s the same discipline that drives me when I’m setting myself those challenges. SO. New challenge is to get up at 6 AM. Everyday. Maybe not weekends. But pretty much. Maybe if I’m telling you now that I want to this, it lets me stick to it because it’s gonna be a bit embarrassing ranting about something and then not living up to it. But in the end, it’s the self-motivation anyway, ‘aight?
Now back to the interesting stuff. Those of you who follow my Instagram and watch the stories might remember that I already tried to shoot a look on Friday. It was quite similar to this one, but the setting was a parking garage and I didn’t wear a skirt but trousers. WELL, I just wasn’t in the photo-vibe, apparently, and didn’t got enough good-outfit-off-showing pictures, so I got up at 8 AM on Saturday to capture the sports ground of my neighbourhood and get those pictures down. Worked much better than Friday, though the light situation was near to a catastrophe. Thanks April, you are doing a pretty good job this year!!!!! (Not.) (Reason for the title.) Anyway. I think you’ll at least get the idea of the look from these pictures, and I think I really got the most of it! Stay optimistic, as I, a true Sagittarius-Being, am always stating.
Jumping right into the look, I think what comes first in view are the legs. There is a lot of legs this week. Because of our beloved mini-skirt. Making up their way all the way in the ’60s, the miniskirt has stayed with us ever since. Interesting side-fact: Girls wearing miniskirts in the 1960’s Britain were called “Ya-Ya girls”, derived from a popular catcall, which was “Yeah yeah” at that time. Very creative, man. And by creative I mean disgusting. And more than that it is horrific, that unwanted sexualized comments are following us, sixty years later, still :-) So here a friendly reminder – if ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE who is reading this, ever catcalled a girl or a boy or any gender whatsoever, please leave my page right now and never show up again because I am definitely sure I don’t like you and you don’t have any reason whatsoever to talk to anyone unless you learned how to behave yourself. And it is pretty sad that we still have to say something like this. Because I don’t want this entry to be a dizillion scrolls long, I’m stopping on feminism-topics now, but I’d like to give a quick hint at the @catcallsof… pages on Instagram (the “…” then replaced by a city of your choice!), which show how much of an urgent problem catcalling really is. And I swear by my favorite pair of shoes if I’m ever getting or seeing someone being catcalled (again) I am going to throw my caffeine-contaminated drink right to their face. Promise. So come and hang out with me, I’m luckily being your snacky, well-dressed, giant protector.

Okay but now really back to the look because the mini-skirt really deserves more appreciation. Because, initially, it was a statement of power. For women in the 1960’s, being able to show themselves and showing off their pretty legs, proudly. Or, for not sweating to death in summer. Not that it is as hot outside that I would sweat to death right now, but I do love myself a mini skirt because if you’re looking at my weird poses, you see how much freedom in movement it gives you! That not being the only reason, I also love how much confidence in yourself they represent. You are showing off a bit of yourself indeed, and that is great. Especially when combined with less cheeky pieces, as I did. That’s generally my recipe for short skirts – don’t make it too much. Not because I don’t think you shouldn’t show off everything you got girl (or boy), but rather because I like my looks to not look that tacky.
And for not looking like Snooky from Jersey Shore, we see a rather sophisticated-looking top half, combined with an urban-streetwear-kind-of bottom half. On the top I wore a blue boyfriend-styled blouse, sprinkling in a tiny bit of color (because it’s still spring guys), topped with a halterneck-top that I’m pretending to be a sweater-vest. The bottom consists of my bespoken mini, combined with platform Chelsea's to make them legs seem even longer. To go along with the urban vibe, and for not getting our pretty hair wet, I added a bomber jacket.
There you are! Look complete! And now to our weekly Yoko-Tip. Ironing. Now please don’t you start screaming at me, I know it is annoying and I don’t like to do it either, but get yourself your favorite podcast on (can’t recommend Zeit Verbrechen and Two Girls one Ghost enough), and iron those wrinkles out baby. It really, REALLY does make a difference in your appearance. Especially when wearing smart pieces like blouses or trousers.
Now go and have a lovely upcoming week! Thank you for reading this far!
