how could we enter spring without dedicating one blogpost to THE spring item? This weeks post is a bit smaller than other ones since what we lay our beautiful eyes on this week is only one single item - the Trenchcoat.
If anyone would ask me about the staples of my wardrobe… I would get a mental breakdown in the first place since I am one decidophobic maniac. But once I would have settled down to a few pieces, the trench would most definitely be one of them.
There is barely an item that works so perfectly easy as a trenchcoat. Wear it over joggers, over slacks, over a skirt, a dress - you name it – and you will look put together. That is why our almost always well-dressed french companions love trenchcoats that much.
Now when buying a trenchcoat, keep two things in mind:
1. The fit
If you buy a trenchcoat, you buy this to wear it over years. It is a piece that will never run out of style and that is how much use you will get out of it. So it is fine to take a few more bucks in your hand, buying one, BUT and that is much more important, take care it fits your body shape. There are numerous shapes, colours and forms to Trenchcoats, and that is lovely, but take care that it is tight enough on your body so it enhances the elegance of your shape, but loose enough so you don’t struggle breathing. Or, easier said, there should be enough room for a sweater underneath. Spring and autumn are cold sometimes.
2. The little “extra something”
As previously mentioned, Trenchcoats come in all shapes, colours and forms. The basic trenchcoat, as Columbo wore it, won’t give you the “Wow!” moment, when entering a room, but rather a puzzled sight and the question if your new life goal is to become a detective to solve (fashion) murder.
Take advantage of the fashion industry's indecisiveness and the need to always create something new - may it be extra layers, an interesting colour, puffed sleeves or, as in my case, applications of other fabrics. There are various options to make your trenchcoat “yours” - just don’t settle for boring.
Now on to the combination of the look -
I paired the Trench with some black pants, loafers, a white turtleneck and a leather vest. The vest takes up the leather applications of the trenchcoat and adds up something extra to the otherwise rather basic look. I topped the look with some tartan sunnies, a golden chain bracelet and golden hoops (you know I love my edge).
Yoko Drip Tip -
I got my trenchcoat at my favourite Vintage Shop in Hannover - Elfie & Ignaz. Make sure you’ll visit. Besides having the loveliest owners, it is always an adventure hunt over there. From fashion to furniture to decoration to a wine at their bar - you’ll get everything and more.
Now back to snuggling up in your blanket, since sun is hiding today again. Stay tuned for the next post, I have something exciting upcoming!
