Hello my precious bunnies,
from last weeks rather delightful backdrop we are switching today to a deserted gas station, where you don’t want to be alone at night. Cough cough. But we want to bring the focus to the looks anyway, ‘aight? I thought it’d be nice to switch things up, backgroundwise, but I do admit that it is indeed a bit crowded. Next week you might be able to see my “beautiful”, at least calm backyard-backdrop again. Shooting these articles is something pretty spontaneous to me, as the rest of life is, so I can’t really tell you what's up next week. We’ll see. But I can tell you what is up this week and I named this post “Twist and Turn” not because I’m doing my weird posing thing again hehe, but because we are transforming a few clothing items today! Yay! And all of that without a sewing machine! More yay!!! So what I really mean with twist and turn is that I wore a few items not the way they are actually meant to be worn. I’ll come to the pieces in particular.
Let’s give the overall-look a quick glance at first. I wanted to create a smart look with interesting shapes, set into contrast by the shoes and also into contrast to the background. Looking at the pictures, just imagine the story of a lost girl whose car has broke down and now is searching for help at a deserted gas station in the wild. Except for that I have no car. Also except that the gas station is next to a big street and not in the wild. Also also except for that the girl, in this case – me, most of the time is not at all lost and would run around asking confused for help and not just sit there and wait for it to come. Aaand I’m running off track again.
So – we have a smart look, all in all. This starts and ends with the fabrics you see here. There is no denim or wool, which would in most cases suggest casuality, but what we have is cotton (and tbh probably also polyester, because fashion industry and their quality standards are just as much a mess as my wallet). But at least you see fabrics that suggest smartness. Keep that in mind when dressing. Especially when you want to go for a certain-typed look (like casual, like cool, like smart, like chic), you can always picture yourself the fabrics that suggest these types and take a look in your wardrobe for those. It’s quite a good direction to start from.
When you want to go for a certain-typed look (casual, cool, smart, chic...), keep the corresponding fabrics for that style in mind.
Now, to the pieces themselves. I paired a white oversized, backless shirt-blouse with pants that are cuffed at the ankle, chunky trainers, a straight camel-coloured Trenchcoat, statement earrings and golden bracelets on each of my hands. On the lip we see a bright pink lipstick, on the nails a bright yellow (It's spring guys!) and in my hands my big black shopper. Side note – I feel much betrayed by this lipstick. The colour of the package suggested it was orange, instead its bright pink. Bright. Pink. Pretty and it works, BUT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN QUITE MY CHOICE. Huh. What. A. Disappointment.
And now we’re going for the interesting shapes and forms. The blouse actually is my usual much-worn, much-loved white shirt. But instead of wearing it like I always do, I just turned it around, tied a knot approximately at waist-height on my back, took the ends, wrapped them around my upper body and tucked the excess fabric under the newly created end – which was for me, roughly measured, at the middle part of my ribcage. Weird explanation. I think I’ll make a Reel of it. Keep your eyes open. This way you’ll get a completely different shirt, with a cheeky backpart. I liked the open back in comparison to the rather prude other pieces.
Now the trousers are actually our lately much-beloved wide-leg pants. Here I was a bit tired of the black mass that you normally create due to all the thick, black fabric, when wandering around in them. Since we never could nor would discard black pants from our looks, I switched things up here, too. And this trick is as easy as it gets – just get yourself two loose hair ties and place them around your ankles, at the height where you want your cuff to sit. Tada – you’ve got a cuffed pants.
I’ll talk about the coat and shoes next, but I’m switching to the jewelry first because this is the last trick I want to give to you. And this is so simple, either. On my hands what I’m wearing are no bracelets at all, but a necklace, that I tied around two times and an ankle bracelet. I’m doing this all the time, when looking for good jewelry. It doesn’t work with all necklaces, but ones that are around 40-60cm in length should be completely fine. Just play a bit around. I chose these, just as the statement earrings, because the clothing pieces themselves are quite plain, so you can go a bit mad in accessorizing. Due to the not-so-common shapes of the top and bottom, I nevertheless decided that the focus should stay there and not on another necklace dangling around my neck. You could say that we kind of create a frame with the bling around the look.
So, a quick look at the shoes – I went for chunky sneakers because, as I said in the Intro, I wanted to contrast the smart pieces. They support the colour palette of neutrals, especially together with the white shirt. Next quick look - at the bag. The big, black shiny shopper is supposed to add up on the smartish vibe. The look is rather smart than chic, because of the largeness of the shoes and bag. Easier than to explain is this little mind play – If I paired the outfit with more delicate shoes (i.e. simple black loafers) and a small bag, what would it look like? Chic! You’re right my friend!
And now the last quick look at the coat – in spring you’ll never do anything wrong with a good trench. Actually, you’ll never do anything wrong, ever, with a good trench. I took this jacket especially, because of it’s warm colour. Next to all the black and white it brightens the look up and makes it a bit a tiny bit more interesting, even though its neutral colour. It also goes along well with the gold of the jewellery.
So far so good - I’m not further boring you. The text has gotten quite long again and I think I gave enough Yoko-Drip-Tips in the article itself.
See you next week, all fesh, all soaked in spring-rain, all lovely,
XX Yoko!
